The first half of the book also contains some quite strong sexual content and drug use. I read it over the course of only a few days and truly could not put it down! The scenes it invokes are vivid. I bought this book in hard back and loved the cover and the presentation. It was love (and inspiration) at first sight: ‘the hunting party’ (december 2018) is lucy foley’s fourth novel but is her debut crime novel, following on from ‘the book of lost and found’ (2015), ‘the invitation’ (2016) and ‘last letter from istanbul’ (march 2018). This is a hugely enjoyable modern version of a classic golden age crime novel, a psychological thriller with the christie like tropes of a country house, only here we have a remote and desolate exclusive hunting lodge situated next to a loch in the bleak and forbidding wintry landscapes of the scottish highlands. I look forward to reading more by lucy foley in the future.

Since then, she has also released ‘the guest list’ (february 2020). I have given it 3 stars just out of admiration for lucy foley that she managed to keep going with it. At times, the story may move along slowly, and i found myself frustrated with some of the characters from keeping their secrets so long, but it adds to the novel and shows the resilience of the characters. This beautifully written book and deeply moving tale will capture your hearts from the first page, it will absorb you into its pages from the start. Lucy foley did an amazing job hopping back and forth from the past (mostly the 20s, but some parts up through wwii) and “present” (which happened to be the 80s).
